when you breastfeed your body produces a hormone called prolactin, prolactin makes it so you cannot ovulate, there fore making pregnancy impossible. of course, if you are not breastfeeding on demand every few hours, your prolactin levels may slip and you may ovulate.

Because sometimes you don't start your period for a long time when you breastfeed. No period means no ovulation, and no ovulation means no pregnancy. You can't count on it for birth control, though, because the length of time is different for everybody and you can't predict it.
