i have been letting my 10 month old cry to sleep, i really did not want to do it but i have tried everything. i tried it one night because he was just waking up every 5 minutes for 2 hours.. i try and leave his room and he will just get and cry. the result was amazing! he fell asleep on his own for under an hour and slept for 6 hours straight! at day time he cries a lot so i have to get in there and ssh and pat him to sleep. but i noticed that if i come to the room and check up on my 10 month old it just stirs him up even more.. i check up on him every 20 - 30 mins. i really want him to learn to fall asleep on his own. how long should i let him cry?

I don't. I don't care how effective CIO is and can be, I cannot let my babies cry themselves to sleep. i think it is cruel. They are looking for love and attention, and I cannot imagine how abandoned they must feel when they cry and no one comes for them. it is not good for their little brains, chemically speaking, or emotionally. I would recommend finding another way. Especially since a 10 month old is probably teething, and in pain, or going through a growth spurt and that is why he is probably waking so often.
