My son is 21 mos. He drinks alot!!! Like tonight he drank 4 sippy cups of water in an hour. He wets as much as he drinks. Is this Normal? It's not like it just started hes been doing it for a long time I just thought I'd ask.

That's basically what I did with my daughter and sippies. But do watch out, I found that she was suddenly not getting enough water. She would be dry most of the day and her morning diaper was barely wet. I started to give her water from a sports bottle, for a while. Once she was staying hydrated, I started to remove it.

Start off by holding it for him. Then put both of his hands on the cup and say you try. Don't put too much fluid in the cup. When he actually tips the cup and takes a drink, give him lots of praise. Don't worry if you have to hold it for him for a while, though. He'll get it.

That does sound like a lot of fluid for a 21 month old depending on the size of the sippy cup. If about 6 oz, that's 24 oz in an hour. It sounds like he just likes to have a sippy cup with something in it. May be more of a comfort thing than his actually wanting that much fluid. I would start having him drink from a regular cup at the table only and not let him carry around a sippy. Save the sippy only for times when you need to take water with you in the car. That way he'll start being in touch with his cues for thirst instead of just mindlessly drinking. The problem with too much water is that it can cause water intoxication ( a depletion of sodium from the body) which can lead to seizures. If he gets about 16-24 ounces of milk a day and maybe 1-2 cups of other fluid like water that is plenty of fluid in a 24 hour period.

Thank you, Neva! That sounds like exactly what We need to do. Any tips for starting the regular cup? He does good if someone else is holding it for him.
