How often should a formula fed baby girl, 9 weeks old, be eating on formula and how much. what is the norm?? i know every baby is different! i switched her to formula at 6 weeks and have been a mess since. i feed her 6 times a day about 3-5 ounces. not sure what others are doing at this stage, and I just need some reinforcement!!

You're doing great! Six feeds a day of 3-5oz is very normal for a baby her age! As she gets older she'll eat more per feed and so eat less often. Keep in mind that babies who eat enough during the day won't wake up hungry in the middle of the night!
I am a true believer in putting babies on a schedule. My son has been on a schedule almost since day 1. He's 7 months old now and it's been a blessing for both of us since he knows what to expect and when, and I find it easier to figure out what he wants when he starts to fuss. I have friends who've struggled with older babies (1yr +) who were never introduced to a schedule.
Keep up the good (and hard) work!

My 9 week old is eating between 6 and 3 oz 5 to 6 times a day. She just had her 2 month check up and her dr. says she is pretty much perfect..so that must be okay.

do you keep her on a schedule or do you feed on demand.  i have my daughter eating on a schedule right now and i wish i wouldn't have gone that route.  the reason i keep doing it is because she is sleeping through the night (10:30-6:30) and i don't know if i switch it up she won't sleep at night.  her little belly doesn't seem to want more than 5 ounces max at any feeding.  i listen to her cues and she seems to like how it is going, she is a happy baby, i just feel like i am not doing things right and am sooooooo happy to have found this group.  thanks for all your help so far!!!

At 9 weeks old my daughter was sleeping through the night, and during the day she would take about 5 ounces every 4 hours.

I started feeding my baby formula at about a month.  Every baby is different.  Mine was eating between 5-6 oz at around 9 weeks .. almost every 3-4 hours.  I had a really big baby, and always worried and still continue to worry if I am over feeding him.  There are limits the dr says about total oz-age per day... and mine was usually just at the limit... sometimes over depending on the day.  I had great friends that helped reassure me.  Your baby will let you know when she is hungry, don't worry fitting in with the norm.. because with babies there really is no norm.  If you want a number... your baby should eat a total of 2.5 oz for every pound that she weighs.  AGAIN... don't let people say you are over or under feeding them.  Follow your gut... you will save yourself so much stress!!!  GOOD LUCK!

My little boy is 11 weeks and is taking hungrier baby milk at 7oz, 6-7 times a day! although he has been sleeping through the night for nearly 3 weeks now (9-7) I had trouble with him at first he was taking different amounts at what felt like all day and night, I spoke to my health visitor and she said he was having little growth spurts and to carry on as I felt comfortable!

heather, as far as i can see you sre doing this fine, not everyone is perfect and we all make mistakes, just listen to what your daughter wants and you will do fine. i've had my little girl in a rountine since she was bout 6 weeks old and she has always slept right throught the night and whould still have her usually naps in the day, i wasn't over feeding her but she was never crying for more if you know what i mean. If you feel like your not happy with her routine then change it but i will warn you i think your concerns are right and she will become unsettled during the night.

But like i said you know your daughter and what she wants so just follow your instincts and everything will work out in the end.

Hope it helps

Good Luck

when my little girl was that old i was giving her 4-5 ounces every 4 hrs (i think it was about that). it depends on how hungry she is try her with different amounts till u find what is right for her. If she drinks all the bottle then try putting in another ounce. i always used to put the extra one in incase she was that little bit hungrier. just go by your instincts on what ur daughter wants and u will get there soon enuf.

good luck

hope it helps

Hello Heather, Sounds like you are doing a very good job with your baby girl. It's such hard work trying to get it right but I think you are . It's very difficult to generalise but I am a health professional. Baby's weight gain is a good way to reassure you. Please don't be afraid to seek advice from your health visitor. If you're not sure how to find her, your gp will give you her phone number. I hope this helps you. All new moms get worried about feeding so you are not a mess, it's normal. Praise yourself for getting through the last nine weeks and good luck in the future.

She is still so young and needs to eat every 3 to 4 hours. I know its hard now but it gets better! I promise! # to 4 oz. every feeding too!

and if you notice that shes still hungry after that try adding on one more oz every 3 hours... you want to spread her out for a longer period of time or else shes going to be eating all the time lolol .. and never be satisfied.

I got this card from similac "mom's guide to feeding" and it states 2-3 month old can eat 5-6oz per feeding which calculates to 5-6 feeding in 24 hours. Your not overdoing it and it's up to baby how much they want to eat. My son is only 5 weeks, and still drinking both formula and breast milk, so sometimes I can tell how much he is drinking. As long as baby is content and growing, your all good.

So long as she's getting at least 28oz or more of formula, don't worry too much about it.  She'll get herself on a schedule soon that works for both of you.  My daughter put herself on a schedule of 4 feedings a day, and that was breast feeding.  My son is 4 months old today, and we're still working it out with him.  When they spend most of their short lives eating however much they wanted, when they wanted you can't expect them to suddenly do what a formula fed baby has been doing since they were born.  Just tough it out a little longer and it will get much better and much easier.  She may not speak, but when she's ready for something new, she'll tell you.

My daughter is almost 10 weeks old and is eating 6 ounces every 3-4 hours, and once a day she will suck down an 8 ounce bottle.  She is sleeping really good though. If you feel like she is always hungry I would add an ounce maybe she won't get hungry so often!

Hi Heather

I've been feeding my baby formula since she was about 2 weeks old. I feed her every 3-4 hours about 4 ounces. Sounds normal to me...

i gave my daughter formula since she was born and we started her at about 2 ounces every three hours. now she is four months and she drinks 4 ounces every 3hours. when i asked the doctor what is the norm she said whenever she asks for it give it to her. so i  do and so far so good she is gaining how she should and not over weight. i am also starting her on solids. not too much 1/2 a jar a day of either vegis or fruit. and she loves it., hope this helps!
