I think whenever you feel like you are comfortable with it, because every child is different and ajust faster than most kids. My son started sleepin in his crib when he first came home from the hospital so he wouldn't get attached to sleeping wit me so it would make it easier for him to sleep by himself when i switched his bed over. He has been sleeping by himself in his toddler bed since he turned a year old but it does have the safety bars on each side at the head incase he rolls out but he loves to sleep in his bed and it also makes it easier for me so if he wakes up he can get out and come to me himself. I can put him in the bed around 8 and he lay there and want get back up.

I tried my daughter at about 17months in a bed for her naps and at night put her in her cot. She slept well in her bed so at around 18months she was in her bed full time with the option of her cot. She loved her bed and didn't want the cot. The weekend we moved the cot out of her room and into the spare room we found out I was pregnant with no.2. My second daughter will be 1 on the 12 November so will wait another 6months before we move her into a bed but already she is keen to sleep in her sister's bed

I switched my son at about 19 months, and it was a dream come true. He started sleeping longer and better through the night, he fell out once but it was so low it wasn't a problem. I close the bedroom door so he can't walk around if he wakes up and now his bedroom is one of his favorite places in the house. It was hard for me at first having his door closed but when I realized I could still hear him if he needed me it went great.

I put my eldest son in a toddler bed when he was 12 months old as I was due to give birth to his brother in the next 3 months.
When my second son disappeared up the stairs and went very quiet while I was washing up I went to find him- he was in his brothers bed fast asleep, he was 15months at the time and made the decision for himself.

My daughter was 15mo when I put her in a toddler bed. Like all of the other ones, it only took a week until she worked out she could get out. But after about a week of no sleep, putting her back everytime she got out she slept the night through. She went into a single bed on her 2nd birthday and we haven't looked back since. You know your child better than anyone, you'll know when they are ready. Hope this helps.
I put my daughter in a bed a week before her first birthday. we are expecting our second child and I wanted her to be comfortable in a toddlers bed for a while before the baby is born. It took her about a week to discover that she can climb out of her bed. We keep her door closed and she has no problems settling herself to sleep. She sometimes hopes out of her bed and plays with her toys and reads some books and then climbs back into bed when she is ready to sleep. you know your child so you will have a good idea of when they are ready to move - mother's instinct! my daughter is now 16 months and doing really well in her bed! good luck

My daughter went to a toddler bed when she was about 16 months. I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do, because she was so young, but she absolutely refused to sleep in her crib. She loved the new bed and now sleeps great through the night, so I guess it all depends your child.

I would agree with Kim below and say its probably a bit too early. My son was climbing out of his crib at 18 months and we tried switching him to a toddler bed. It was a nightmare. He litterally got out of bed 20+ times a night. He just wasn't ready. We put the crib back up and waited until after he was 2 and when we finally made the switch he did great. After the first week he would go down awake and put himself to sleep. Every child is different so try and look for the signs that your child is ready for it, but like Kim said, hold off as long as possible because it will be easier later on.

There is no set age to move them to a toddler bed but I do think 18 mos is a bit young. There is no rush to get them out of their crib. Unless they are climbing out of their crib or are physically outgrowing it, keep them in there as long as possible. Just remember, once they go in a toddler bed it doesn't take long for them to figure out how to get out of bed and that's a battle every parent has to face!
