at about 15 months i handed them to them with their plates, I don't recall when they started using them right or all the time, it just sorta happened.

I let me daughter us a spoon/fork made for toddlers when she started eating regular food...not baby food. I let her play them while I was feeding her and eventually she started to use them. But honestly she's 2 1/2 years old and would rather use her hands then use utensils! lol Just seems easier to use your hand to pick the food up then these forks or spoons I guess!! It's your choice when to let them start using the, there's no right or wrong time!! All kids learn to use them, wether they use them when they know how to is a different story!!

My son is 18 months and sometimes tries to use a spoon or fork, but gets impatient, chucks it over the side of the highchair, and digs in with both hands!

Consistently? My 22-month old still uses his fingers sometimes, but he's using the silverware more often as he gets older. But just using it in general? I started letting him hold his own spoon at around 8-9 months or so, just so that he could practice with it, and he's just gradually become more and more comfortable with it over the months. For forks, I just made sure to get the ones with rounded tips.
