My daughter is 15 and has very long hair (down to about her belly button). I scheduled a hair cut for her for this coming Monday and I think it would be good for her to take some of the length off. She says that she wants to cut it up to her shoulders but has some hesitation about it. I think that might be cute, but I don't want her to regret it. What would be a good length for a 15 year old girl? I will take any suggestions.

How about doing something simple like cutting off to about middle of her back and have some nice layers put in? This way she can take some length off, and get used to it. The layers will add a more mature style to it. If she is fearful of cutting to much off, that is what I would recommend to my own daughter. This way, she can be brave about the length (by actually cutting some off) and get some style. That may help her for the next cut to go a bit shorter. I remember my first hair cut, and I was about her age with hair down to my butt. I went slowly with each cut, getting shorter and shorter until I was chin length.

Thanks for your help, I have recommended this to her. She has seen some really cute styles but is very conflicted. She is starting to feel that her long hair is rather childish and thinks that a shorter hairstyle will make her look more mature. She has come to me crying because she does not want to make a poor choice and tells me "mommy, if i cut my hair and it looks bad i am going to be ugly". I think shorter hair would definitely be good for her and I think she believes that too. If it was your daughter, what would you do?

Well, hair grows. If she wants to cut it, she should. If she doesn't like it, the wonderful thing is she can grow it back to the length it was. There is no specific recommended length, just whatever she wants. Have her flip through some style magazines and see what she likes.
