How to deal with a moody preteen?

My 12 year old daughter has been very moody and snappy lately. I try to talk to her and she just brushes me off. She's always on the phone texting/talking to her friends, she never wants to be involved with anyone. After school she goes to her room and doesn't really acknowledge anyone. All she talks about is liking boys and how to talk to a boy. I'm trying to get her to realize that she needs to think about more important things than boys. I don't know if it's just puberty or something else. Any advice?

Part of it is about puberty and teenagers in general. It isn't unusual for a teen to just shut themselves away. However, part of it is about the boundaries you don't have at home. Set boundaries around use of the phone. Set some kind of guidelines about your expectations. Set aside family time, where she should also be participating and interacting with the family. You can't change the way she thinks, but you can change some of the things in your home to maintain and strengthen her interaction with the family.
