How to end sleepless nights?

Wondering what i could be doing wrong....we have a 16month old son, who wasn't much of a sleeper from the beginning. But he was doing good before the holidays, from 8pm-7:30am . But after the holidays he stopped sleeping...naps are now 30-45min stretches, used to be 1hr30-2hrs. And nights are now 8 or 8:30 pm and then only sleeps for 1hr1/2 - 2hrs at a time, the whole night.... I never liked the cry it out method but we have used it before and after 20 mins he would settle. Now he won't at all... He will start to panic, hyperventilate, run on the spot in his crib....scream a lung.... It can go on for hrs.. He wants me and nothing else... What do i do?! Its been 3 long weeks.....and not getting any better!!

My daughter is only 5 weeks old and goes to bed at ten wakes up at 2 and again at 7 so really she only wakes up once at night. Were thinking she will be one of those babies that sleeps during the night at 8 weeks. She is the type of baby that loves to cuddle so I let her sleep in the bed I know I would never roll on her so even though doctors say its bad I feel its the only way to help her sleep if she gets laid down after falling asleep and no ones next to her she will literally wake up 15 mins later. So my trick is sleep with baby in bed.
