How do I explain to my five year old that her big sister has a different father. My oldest knows who her biological father is. He is not in her life now for the past three years and was in and out for the first eight years. My five year old asked why her sister doesn't look like or have the same skin color as her. She also asked why daddy was not there for her sister when she was a baby, but has been there for her little sister and sister.

My daughter has always been brought up knowing her brother had a different dad. I've just always told her I was married once before to her brother's daddy. It doesn't bother her in the least, so I would just go with the truth.

If we want to really get complicated, I will add that my daughter also has a half sister and half brother who don't live with us (but visit) and both of them have the same daddy as her, but different mothers. Kids are amazingly adaptable and accepting.

Jodi has hit the nail on the head. My kids have always known their 1/2 sister has a different mother, it's no big deal, and it's the truth.

Just tell her the truth. You had a relationship with another man before your current husband, and the two of you decided to make a child, but the relationship ended. You can tell her that when you met her father, and decided to build a family, he took on the role of the older sister's father if he has been the father figure in her life. If not, just stop at "the relationship ended."
