How to get my 9 year old daughter to be okay with sleeping by herself?

My 11 year old is wanting her space and wants to sleep alone. She's a bit mature for 11. The 9 year old absolutely cannot sleep by herself. I'm on my second week of staying with her until she falls asleep. I've tried everything from fully explaining that there is nothing to be afraid of... to asking her why she doesn't want to (she can't come up with any real reasons only that she doesn't want to)... to listening to her cry for hours on end... to holding her and praying with her.... I'm at my wit's end! Is 9 years old still too young for me to insist that she learn how to sleep by herself?

My two girls have only ever been apart one night in their lives.... and the one that was home slept in my room. ;) They haven't always been in the same room, but have been for over 95% of their lives. I can't imagine how tough it would be if one of them decided she wanted to sleep alone, so I really don't have any advice. Just wanted to wish you luck and let you know that you're not alone in your 'co-sleeping' situation.

If you have a pet, you might want to let it sleep with her. That's my only idea.

My 2 year old sleeps by herself as well as my 5 year old son. Both walk themselves to their rooms and get into their beds they get a sports bottle of water and we just tuck them in and leave. They shared a room for about 18 months because my son wanted his sister in his room when we moved her out of our room but we just moved them a month or so ago and neither had an issue. They went to bed at different times anyways. I don't really have advice but 9 is plenty old enough to sleep alone.
