How to get my child to switch from bottle to sippy cup with formula in sippy?

I've been having issues with my 10mth old son to give up the bottle. His Doctor wanted him off at 9mths. I tried he did good for 4 days and then he stopped taking the sippy cup. All he did was whine and cry and I gave him his bottle back. Now, I'm ready to try this again. He will drink water out of a Sippy cup. We have so many different kinds of cups due to this. They all seem like the milk comes out to fast for him. But wanted to know if this is normal? Any suggestions?

Thanks ladies! I really dont know why his Dr. Wanted him off the bottle so early. He does drink out of a sippy cup for all other drinks except milk. I'll give him more time then try again. Thanks for the advice.

No need to take him off the bottle so soon. 18 months is a good age to be done with the bottle. But this is a great time to teach him how to use a sippy cup. There are sippy cups out there that mimic the bottle with a soft tip and smaller holes while he's learning. I also agree with other suggestions of only using the bottle for milk and using the sippy cup for other types of drinks. Or, only use the bottle at bedtime and use the sippy cup the rest of the day.

9 months? That seems early to me, here both my dr and my health nurse said by 14-18 months... and the health nurse wanted her off the sippy cup by 18 months too, not happening.... What was suggested to us was use the sippy cup for everything EXCEPT formula including in a few months when other milk is introduced. That helped us with weaning off the bottle after a year, she was off the bottle at 15 months. She's 20 months, still uses a sippy cup, we practice a regular cup in the bathtub (clean water of course) and sometimes in the high chair with water only... till she gets used to the spilling and not dumping it off herself I'm not stopping that one!!

Why did your doctor want him off by 9 months? I don't see the issue in continuing bottles, but ALSO introducing sippy cups. If you were breastfeeding, would your doctor want your baby off the breast? I suggest you as him that, because if that's the case.....I'd be finding a new doctor because it is a ridiculous concept.
