At 15 she should be old enough to talk to the teachers and find out for herself what needs to be done.

Why did she get the bad grades? Does she not understand the work or did she just not do it? How bad of grades are you talking about?

My kids know from very early on that they will not get in trouble for grades if they are doing all the work, studying, and seeking help if they need it. If they are NOT doing those things then they will be grounded until the grades come up (we have online grading that is updated frequently)... unless I know ahead of time when the grades will come up (example... my daughter went from straight A's to half F's simply for missing two days of school... she still has some low grades, but has completed all the work for the classes and it's just a matter of turning them in).

I like to write my teenagers a note and stick it on the fridge for when they come home. That way the problem, the consequences, and the way to a solution are all written down and there is no arguing about it. Some may not agree w/ that approach, but it works for us.
