How to help my 7 year old?

My son is 7 and an only child. His best friend who lived next door moved away suddenly a few weeks ago and now he is super lonely. There are no more kids his age in the neighborhood that we let him hang out with and I just don't know what do for him anymore. I get sad when I see him sad. I wish I knew more people but I'm not as social as he is. What can I do to help him?

If there are no kids in the neighborhood you're comfortable with him playing with, is there something farther away that he could meet kids you are comfortable with? like swimming? or a park farther away that you can take him to?

I agree with those suggesting a team sport or scouts, or some other organised extra curricular activity involving other kids. My son has always played sport, and it has been fantastic for him in his social development. It is also a way to get to know other parents as well, so that way, I don't have an issue with him going to their homes too.

Given that you have also said their are no kids his age in the neighbourhood that you LET him hang out with, I just want to ask the reason you won't LET him. If it is because you don't know the parents, then maybe it is time for you to get to know them. I know you are saying you are not as social as your son, but I feel that as parents, it is our job to get to know the parents of our childrens' friends.

Get him involved in some sports, or boy scouts/cub scouts. Take him to the local park and let him play. Do you have a class list is he friends with anyone that you can schedule play dates with.

Yes, we are just finishing up his soccer season this week. After this weekend there will be nothing for him to do until Summer Camp and even then, he gets lonely in the evening and on the weekends when we are home and he's tired of playing basketball in his room.
