Reading has to be made fun again, maybe the school needs to adopt a different approach altogether. Have you visited an occupational therapist at all? Honestly, his best support comes from you, so just make sure that he understands you will be patient and you do not think he's stupid for having difficulties. Reading and writing go hand in hand, maybe just keep working on his writing first, just the basics, and basic reading as well. If he has difficulty with the grade 2 level, just have him try preschool and grade 1 level books. Trying to move ahead before he's ready may be the cause of his frustration, just hug him when he's upset, and try something different.
