any ideas or suggestions on how to keep a 20 month old hydrated who has tonsilitus??

Get him to sip water little and often.

I suffer badly with tonsilitis (I've had it 3 times this year so far and I know I'll have it at least twice more before the year is out) the only thing I can drink is room temperature water. Anything else irritates my throat too much and makes it worse.

I do the same with my kids when they have it too.

homemade juice pops. You can make your own juice and pour it in an ice cube tray. That way you can better control the sugar content.

Popsicles, ice blended up in a blender-maybe add a little flavoring if he won't eat just crushed ice.
