How to motivate my 13 year old to make healthy food choices/lose weigh

My 13 year old has been told by the doctor that she should lose 10-15 pounds. She hasb een overweight most of her life but is extremely active and loves life, has great friends and plays lots of sports. I am thin and have a background of eating disorders. We only have healthy things in our house and cook healthy food, but she spends time out and at friends houses and her choices are not good. Help! She doesn't really want to take ownership of this . Suggestions?

I agree with Sarah, she may have an eating disorder of her own.
I am assuming by "lots of sports" you mean she plays at least 3, which would mean practice or games/competitions at least 5 days a week or more, plus training outside of practices and competitions on weekends. On top of that, you are providing at least half of her food, which is all healthy. She would either have to have a medical condition causing the weight gain or an eating disorder where she is sneaking food to stay that heavy.

Being that active, even if she were making some poor decisions while with her friends, she would still be at a fairly healthy weight. If she is with her friends, making these unhealthy choices often enough to cause her to gain weight, her performance in her sports would suffer--she wouldn't have the energy or endurance needed to succeed if she were eating too much junk food.

Something else must be off. A 13 year old girl should be able to maintain a healthy weight with no more than 1 to 1.5 hours of moderate intensity exercise 4 to 6 times a week, even with some unhealthy choices thrown in there.

I'm agreeing with the other ladies, what you have said doesn't really add up.

If she has been 'overweight' for most of her life, but she has an active lifestyle and mostly healthy eating habits... is it possible that she just has a large build and doesn't actually need to 'lose' any weight?

If she is as active as you describe and you provide the majority of her food as helathy choices; is there a medical issue that is causing her to not lose weight? At 13, her metabolism should be quite efficient and if she does play sports all of the time, she must be consuming a lot of calories. Is she eating secretly?
