how to potty train a 16 months old

My first thoughts would be that she is too young to potty train yet. But I ALWAYS say you need to follow your child's lead. If she is not wanting to sit on the potty, or not understanding how it all works. If she can't communicate with you that she has to go potty. If she is not staying dry for long periods of time. Then she is not ready. THE BIG THING WITH POTTY TRAINING IS IT IS THE CHILD'S ACCOMPLISHMENT NOT THE PARENTS! If the parent pushes a child to train when they decide it is time it is only going to take longer and be more frustrating. I have two friends.....one waiting until her child asked to go potty and showed the signs that he was ready. He was 3 yrs old when he was ready. It took one week and he was trained no accidents. My other friend was anxious and wanted to start at 22 months with her daughter. Her daughter had just started to take an interest in the potty, but was not staying dry and was not ready for the training part.....she needed more time. Anyway, my friend read books on how to potty train and did everything to the T......well she is now almost 4 yrs old and still has accidents daily. You have to follow your child's lead. You want to encourage, but not push. It is just like learning everything else. You help teach them, but they have to be ready to learn it or it is no use teaching it at that age.
