I have to keep reminding my 10yo that I would prefer to hear the truth to start off with. He knows that he will get into more trouble WHEN I find out he has lied.

The main thing is to not be too reactive when they tell you the truth straight away. That way you gain their trust and they know that they can come to you with anything.

It took me a good 10-12 months before he realized it was better to tell me the truth because I always found out and the punishment was worse.

What is she lying about? I think your first step is to find out WHY she is lying. You need to get to the bottom of it. It's a bit hard to give advice when you haven't said what sort of lies we are talking about.
