How to stop my 3 year old spitting?

My daughter picked up the awful habit of spitting and I can't get her to stop. We've tried time outs, smacking and now we're doing behavior sticker charts. So far the chart has cut it down a bit, but she's still doing it. Help, what else can I try?

Thanks, she does it when she's happy, sad almost anytime. sigh.

I spoke to my GP and he says his 4 year old is still spitting, so I don't feel alone.

I have tried spitting back and she thinks it's funny and only seems to encourage her.

Spit back? Show her how gross and disrespectful it is? Put something she doesn't like in her mouth and explain that THAT is the purpose of spitting, and only that?

I can only suggest making a note of when she is doing it and going from there. My 3 year old only spits after he's been sitting still watching TV for too long so once I let him outside or let him run around and play he doesn't do it anymore. If I can't let him run around, regular discipline (smacking etc,) seems to help. Patience with the behavior chart if that's cutting it down a bit. And positive reinforcement (a treat if she doesn't spit for a predetermined amount of time). Good luck!
