My four year olds having temper tantrums and I spoil them a lot so I just give them what they want to stop them, but since I'm pregnant and getting ready for the baby I don't have time to deal with them. How do I stop them without giving in?

Well every time you have given in to a temper tantrum you have reinforced that it works. Unfortunately to undo it is going to be a long process of many tantrums, because now you have to stop. If you think you're going to end up giving in after 5, 10, 20, 60 minutes then just give it to them to begin with but once you say no if you really want the tantrums to end you can't give in. Before you start though I would sit down and explain to your 4 year old that you will no longer be giving into the tantrums, they should have some understanding, and should be given an explanation since its going to be a huge shock to them. However don't say it's because of the new baby you don't want to create hostility before the baby arrives.

Amy is right. Every time you give in you reaffirm that throwing a fit is the way to get what you want. You have to stop giving in... no matter how hard it is or how long it takes.... and you need to expect that it WILL get worse before it gets better. You've spent 4 years caving, so you can't expect that behavior to disappear over night. How long it takes really depends on your child's determination... and yours too.

I will add that my son is 5 and will still throw a good tantrum sometimes when he doesn't get what he wants. It doesn't WORK... and hasn't for as long as I can remember, but he is very stubborn with a wicked temper... so he still tries. @@ All it gets him is sent to bed til he stops screaming.
