How to take away the binkie

This is an ongoing disagreement in my house :) I think that when my daughter is ready to give up her binkie she will, my husband says that she's to old for it and it needs to be taken away. Lucky for us she has managed to misplace all of them the last few days and has gone 48 hours without one. She woke up in the middle of the night last night looking for it and I had to go into her room and get her to lay back down, she managed to fall asleep without it but it got me thinking. Did any of you trade the binkie for something else, like a stuffed animinal?

I left them in until their 3rd birthday. I heard that the sucking reflex is present until age 3, so I let that be my cut-off. I also heard that it would start to effect their teeth around age 3-4.

I prepared them ahead of time, so they knew that they had to give it up after their birthday cake. Then we put them all in an envelope, marked Timbuktu on it and dropped it in the mailbox. ;)

It worked really well for my oldest, but my youngest - who is very touchy-feely - had a hard time. Even now (almost 4) she occasionally tries to suck on my arm.

*We also had a rule that they always had to remove it to talk (it was almost only for sleeping).

My daughter is almost 2, LOL and I did try and tell him that if she did decide to take it to HS that she would have to deal with her friends. He didn't want her to have one at all and was kinda upset that someone bought her one, but when we were still in the hospital she put her thumb in her mouth and he freaked out and had my mom run to the store and buy one because the binkie would be easier to take away then the thumb :)

My daughter was SIX when she gave it up. I felt the same way. How old is your daughter? She just couldn't deal with me and my husband being separated. I couldn't take it away. I agree that when they're ready is a good time. We replaced it with a snuggle bunny (literally). Taking it cold turkey is cruel IMO.

Tell your husband it's not like she's going to HS with it lol.
