He is too young to learn the alphabet and numbers. But as he explores his world you can tell him the name of things and the sounds that they start with, what color they are, how many there are and even count them to him, the shapes of things. Do this while is is exploring or point to them. He is not going to understand that certain letters are this or that or that the numbers are this or that. Even flash cards are not going to hold his interest. He is supposed to have energy at this age and be active. Most 18 month old kids are like this. What makes you think he is going to sit still to learn the ABC's or 123's? You need to find ways to focus his energy to the things you want him to do and it is called redirecting him. That will help a lot. Take him outside to play to expell most of his energy during the day. Get down on his level and play with him. Take him for walks. Take him to the park to play too. Find out if there are families in your area with children his age and start play dates to give him others to play with.
