How to transition 18 m/o from cosleeping to crib without using "cry it out" method.

I'm new to this site and could really use some of you experienced Mom's help! I'm a SAHM with a husband in the military and mother of 18 month old girl and 10 year old boy. Our 18 month old has co-slept with us since birth. We are ready to transition her into her crib in her room. All the books out there seem so overwhelming to me that I'm not sure what would be the best way to attempt this transition.

I started with naps. Bedtime stories were read in their room (I've done this with 2 kids) and when I would put their clothes away or clean their rooms, I would put them in the crib to play while I stayed in the room doing my tasks. My son was a little tougher in that I had to start by letting him fall asleep in my bed and move him to his when I was ready to go to bed so he awoke in his crib. Also, once they transitioned to toddler beds, they were each told we sleep in our own beds but if they wake in the middle of the night, they can come to ours. It made going down easier and for the most part, they sleep right through. Good luck!
