I am at my wits end! I have a 5 year old daughter who is completely emotionally out of control! I have Child Development education and have done everything I can think of from giving her choices and control over parts of her daily routine, to time outs, to reward charts/jars, to spanking. . . I can't win!! Constant disrespect, sassy, my way or no way, full on tantrums that last over an hour! HELP!

Thank you so much for your reply! It is so helpful to know that there are other mothers out there struggling with the same behaviors and that mine isn't just a monster!!! I will definitely check out those book suggestions! Thank you! I too am anxiously awaiting the start of Kindergarten!

Oh Sarah, we are in the same boat sister! I have a Music Therapy degree and worked with kids with issues. Some of ours lateral-ed between us and juvenile detention.

My darling daughter engages in the same behaviors and we've tried pretty much everything too. (She has mild sensory and sound processing issues too, so that compounds things.) I also have another friend in "our boat". Her daughter is right there too.

Have you read "Raising the Spirited Child" and "Magic 1-2-3"? Those have helped me. (though we were told to count 3-2-1 because there's no where to go after "1") The first one helped me understand WHY she does the things she does and offers up suggestions that may work. It is VERY supportive. I keep my copy by the bedside and just read parts now and then. It also helps you to find YOUR personality type and how it fits with your child's. I'm not going to say it solved all our problems, but I understand her better and am able to step back more often and get a better grip on the situation. The "Magic 1-2-3" book uses a great technique to teach how to stop obnoxious behaviors and how to start good ones.

It is so frustrating knowing you have the education and still have troubles. It really IS different when the child is your own. I'm not sure why that is, but it is just the same.

My SIL said she noticed kids go absolutely nuts the summer before kindergarten. They lose their little minds from about May to August. Maybe it is the huge transition they are anticipating but unable to express. I don't know. I'm just hoping the start of kindergarten will help smooth things out.

Hang in there Sarah. Know you are NOT ALONE and you are doing your best. It's frustrating, but you have at least one friend on here who understands. :)
