My daughter is 9 and she has over the last few months become very moody and easy yo bring to tear and upset. She has been distancing myself from her friends and prefers to spend her time alone. My first reaction when I read this was that she may be going through puberty and is not sure how to process her emotions or other changes in a constructive way. Although, Jill's comment about being bullied may not be off the mark either. It could be a mixture of things that have piled up or escalated to the point that she's having difficulty navigating all the issues.

These are definitely warning signs of an inner struggle that she's dealing with. You should talk to her and ask her why she is resorting to these behaviors. Don't push too hard, as she may just shut down, but let her know that you're concerned about her and are there to help her. Keep trying to build up her self esteem and try to help her focus on positive things going on in her life. If she doesn't seem to respond to you then you may need to get outside help from a counselor, a trusted friend, or someone else that may be able to reach her.

My first response is that she may be getting bullied at school. The pulling away from friends is not necessarily a problem, but spending too much time alone can be a problem.

I recently read a book called Hold onto Your Kids, Why Parents Need to Matter More than Peers by Dr. Gordon Neufeld and Dr Gabor Mate. I recommend it. Here is a link to Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1...

Another really excellent book by Dr. Shimi Kang is called The Dolphin Way: A Parent's Guide to Raising Healthy, Happy, and Motivated Kids-Without Turning into a Tiger

Hope this helps.
