My 84 year old mother in law hosts Christmas Eve at her house with all of his late fathers family. My husband has revealed that he doesn't want to carry on this tradition she has become stuck on. My sister in law and my husband and I live with her now to help her out. Our family dynamics have changed because this is a second marriage for both of us in which we each have 2 daughters from our former marriages. The whole evening feels so rushed and not fun. Just seems like an expectation. I told him what if we restructured this event this year, and host a family party on the weekend before Christmas with catered food ? Not saying to eliminate it. This way we can celebrate Christmas Eve with our immediate family. My daughters are 21 and 19, grand baby on the way, his girls are 14 and 17.
