I have a 14 month old boy who "strangles" himself. He will do it while drinking milk, lying down, going to bed, etc. When I pull his hands away and tell him know, he laughs. I don't want him to hurt himself but I am also worried it could be a symptom for something else...HELP!! He has a checkup with the ped. soon so I will ask her but in the meantime...any other advice?

I just thought of something. If ignoring it sounds too hard, you could always try distracting him w/ a toy or something while he's doing it. Not by drawing attention to what he's doing, but just a casual 'hey ds, look what this car can do' kind of response. Good luck!

That's what I was thinking Teresa - eventually he'll pass out and start breathing again and that's the worst it will get.

Have you REALLY just ignored it? Or have you ignored it until you hear him choking? Because that is still giving him a reaction. Just ignore it entirely.

If he doesn't stop before.... He will stop when he passes out and then he'll be able to breathe again. I highly doubt it would come to that, but that seems like the worst that could happen. The more attention you give to it the longer he will do it.

If you are really concerned you can always ask his ped about this behavior.

seems as though he's just experiamenting with the sensation of doing it (kind of like when kids stick their fingers down their throats and gag). i would just keep an eye but not make too big of a deal out of it. the more attention/reaction he gets the more he's likely to keep doing it - little to no reaction will get boring for him and he'll likely stop. but it's definately something to ask the dr about if you're concerned...but like jodi said, he'll pass out before he does any harm to himself and the body will naturally resume normal breathing once that happens (i know, sounds easy but not fun to deal with). gl!

I have tried both ways...when I ignore it he still does it. In fact my husband has heard him doing it from another room and he starts coughing so my husband runs in. Yes, like strangles or chokes himself...thumbs right at the throat, fingers wrapped around neck...

What do you mean? He is putting his hands around his neck and making himself choke? it sounds like he sees it as a game. He won't strangle himself, he'll pass out before that happens. If it is what I think it is, I'd just ignore it, rather than pay attention and it won't become a game any more. I doubt he will truly hurt himself.
