I have a 17 pound 2 month old...don't worry, he was big at birth, lol! I have thought about offering some rice cereal since he sits well supported and will easily eat an 8 oz. bottle every 2-3 hours, 5 hours at night. I know what the recomendations are (4 months) but I think he is ready...thoughts?

I think for that age they should weigh around 12 lbs give or take 1-2 lbs. Also, at that age, it should be about 2.5 ounces of bm or formula multiplied by weight. So if your baby weighs 12 lbs, that is 12 x 2.5 = 30 oz total in a 24 hour period. But your son is 17 lbs (which is like the wieght of a 4 month old?) which means you should be giving 42 oz is a 24 hour period. That is WAY to much. Talk to your pediatrician.

Sorry but no he is not ready. He could be that big because of you offering this food to soon. He is 2 months so I don't see how he could sit up on his own, or have the control in his neck quite yet. It is really recommended to wait to offer foods between 4-6 months. But really 6 months is best. I think your baby is to young. And that is a very large amount 8oz at that age. I would be speaking with your pediatrician.

Ok, I am sorry but you are not doing anything wrong..... I am 5'3 and 135, my hubby is 5'11 and 245.... If your doctor hasn't said anything bad then ignore anyone else has to say... I would recommend speaking with your doctor before just starting solids...
My first was born at 37 weeks and 6lbs even. By the time he was 2 months old he was 11lbs by 4 months he was 20lbs.. I spoke with his Doctor who told me it was ok to put 2 tbsp. of rice cereal in 8oz of formula.
My 2nd was born at 36 weeks at 3lbs 8oz with Gastroschisis { insides outside belly} She was my smallest and still is.. She didn't hit 17lbs till she was 8 months old.
My 3rd was born at 38 weeks at 5lbs 13.5oz, by the time he was 3 months he was 15lbs once we figured out he was allergic to Milk and Soy, So we spoke with his doctor to one put him on Nutramigen formula and had us adding 2 tbsp. rice cereal to his 8oz bottle...
1st is now 6 and is all of 45lbs
2nd is almost 5 and is all of 35lbs
3rd is 13 months and is 26lbs
I know this will not last long, as my older 2 slimed way down once they we walking, running and able to play outside...
Hope this is helpful, Best Wishes and Take Care....

I have a large large baby too. he was born over 10 lbs. we were ok to try him on a bit of cereal to see if her seemed more satisfied, and itd be fine but it plugged him up real bad n made him grunt a lot, also im 5'3 aqnd 145, but all the babies in my fam arrive big and grow really fast the first year. we also reached developmental milestones sooner, but we leveled out with other kids our age by year 1. if we were wild animals youd just be an exceptyionally successful parent,, it's genetics. :) congrats.

Are you and/or dad big people? If you and your spouse are both 6 feet plus, that may be an appropriate weight. chiuauas don't give birth to St Bernards.
My daughter was just under 3 pounds at birth, she was 3+ months early and was expected to be very sick, she wasn't, the doctor told me she'd be blind, retarded, etc. I asked how long she'd been practicing, she said xx years, I told her to keep it up, she may get it right one day.
I can't control your kid to mine, but I'd say that's one huge kid, you may be overfeeding him

God he's a big boy .Look I agree with little Miss, I would not be giving him cereals at this age breast or formula milk is best for him for now . Can I ask what weight he was when he was born?
