I have no money for my daughter's sweet 16 party!

My daughter turns 16 on December 27. We are very limited on funds. She is the oldest of our 4 girls and I would like to make it a special day for her. We might be able to let her have 1 or 2 friends over, but nothing extravagant. We really can't go anywhere or have a big to-do at home. I so want to do something special. Does anyone have any cheap suggestions? She even said she wouldn't want a party at home because there is nothing to do here. Doing something elsewhere seems to cost a fortune!

Thank you for the suggestions. She does know we cannot do much and she is ok with that. But she doesn't ask for much as a general rule, so my husband and I would like to do something nice for her. We did think about watching movies, having snacks and having a couple of her friends come over (sending her 3 younger sisters to the grandparents' house for the night). Her 14 year-old sister now wants to have a surprise party for her, inviting her class (24 kids!). I explained we are not able to do that, financially as well as sanity-wise (I do not want 25 teenagers in my house)! Thank you again for your suggestions.

Offer to have a movie party for her and ask those friends to bring their favorite movies over to watch or if you can afford the RedBox at the local stores get something they want to see that was out during the summer that they have not yet. Make popcorn and have some tea or softdrinks (two liter bottles should be on sale now with holidays), make the cake for her, get her some nice little trinket gifts such as small sample scents, bath/body things like body wash and lotions, nail polish....the list goes on for simple in expensive things and you do not need to get a lot of them. She has to understand that you are limited on what you can do and offer this option to her. My daughter turned 16 and we did not do the grand theme thing or go anywhere to have a party. Her party was my parents, her brother, her aunt and cousin. We had a simple get together. We found some music from the 60's like 16 Candles, and one about being Sweet 16 and her grandpa danced with her to those songs. Tell her it is not about the place she gets to have it but about those that love her being there to celebrate her 16th birthday.
