When my middle son turned 5 I had a pirate birthday. I got 2 of the really big boxes from Sams club-the kind they put watermelons in- I asked ahead of time to save 2 for me, and when I could pick them up. I turned these into ships. The lids I used for sails and cut a door in the side for each. Decorated with spraypaint. I had my 15 year old daughter "tell a story of pirate adventure" which the kids acted out with the games. My 13 year old son and his friend dressed up as pirates (rolled up black pants, wore white shirts, bandanas on their heads) and lead the two "crews" in the adventure games. The two ships were used as a pirate ship fight. I had a laundry baskets full of water balloons in each ship. The kids threw them at each other in their war. The last game (there were a couple of others, but I forget) was finding the treasure. We spray painted rocks with gold metallic paint and buried it in their sand box. Each child got to take home their gold. They absolutely loved it! We had cupcakes with Hershey "treasures" candy bars on top. The whole thing was in the back yard, and with preplanning and getting the older kids to narrate, I got to sit back and enjoy along with the other parents. It was one of the best birthdays for all of my kids!
