I'm concerned about my 3 year old daughter

Hi. My daughter was born premature and underweight. She weighed only 1.26 kgs when she was born and was confined to the incubator for 3 weeks. At present, she is almost 3 years old and weighs 10 kgs and is very active and understands what we speak. But she hasn't started talking as yet. Secondly, she never turns around or responds when we call her name. At the same time, she is hypersensitive to sounds. She detects and reacts even to the slightest of noise. But I am worried why she never responds when we call her name. She understands whatever we speak and responds nonverbally. But though she produces sounds and utters words occasionally which she never repeats, she hasn't started talking properly. I am really worried. Is it a serious problem?

Premature babies often have a speech delay, which tends to disappear as they gradually catch up but some kids need help from a therapist well into their elementary school years.

Her pediatrician should have caught this at her 2 year check up and have referred you to a speech therapist. If this process has not started, then you should contact your doctor for a referral.

The important thing then is that she has now started therapy. You must ensure that she goes for as long as the therapist deems it necessary. Don't expect fast results, but things will eventually improve.

When she's home, talk to her as much as possible. Pause to let her have a chance to respond, even if she doesn't, because you'll be modelling correct patterns of conversation. As she's three, you could even play with her with a set of dolls and have the dolls talk to each other as you play with her.

You're right. He did tell us that she needs therapy. My parents of course dismissed that because, for them, therapy is only for physically challenged children. But now they have seen through reason and she is going through therapy. I only pray she starts talking soon.
Thanks for your response Liz.
