I want my son to be more responsible financially. He's 19 and all his life his paternal grandmother has given him anything he's wanted and still is. He now thinks that I should support him financially i.e clothing, spending money etc. I told he doesn,t need to pay room and board, however when he turns 20 he has to pay for his own cell phone. Should I still be buying his cloths? Am I being to strict?

Nope. You should not be supplying his wardrobe or his phone. If he is in college, he can have a part time job. Or if he is a full time student, you can cerainly HELP, but it should not be expected. If he is not going to college, he can pay his own way. And, IF he refuses, that is exactly when I would draw up an agreement for room and board.

When my kids turn 18 they will either be full time college students with me helping to support them (them still paying any wants) or they will have a job and be paying something for rent, food, and paying their own personal bills. I would not be paying the cell phone bill of a 19 year old or buying him clothes.

If I bought him clothes to help him get a job, I would expect reimbursement from his first paycheck.

Thank you for your reply, it did help....He has dropped out of college (which I paid for already with the 529 plan) He just started working again and I bought new pants and a shirt to start out with.
I do think I am being fare, but I can't help feeling guilty, I believe by me doing this will help him in the long run... Tough Love! Who does it hurt more us or them? lol
