If you live in the US (since that's the only place I'm familiar with) contact your local DHS office and/or Section 8/HUD. They will be able to tell you what you need to know.
If you are outside of the US... let people know what country you are in and hopefully someone IN that country will be able to give you the name of the right office for you to contact. ;)

If you live in the USA, apply for public housing. It's not usually in the best neighborhoods, but it's better than being homeless with a baby. If you're disabled or a parent, you get priority. Additonally, if you are in the US, contact your state representative, I explained the situatio to her and she got me into an apartment in three weeks. I'm disabled and my daughter and I were sick at the time, so that may have been an issue.

If you or your children go to school perhaps you can set up a roommate situation with another single mom. Advertise for a roommate but screen and interview and ask for references. Many people rent in-law quarters and will reduce the rent if you offer to do lawn work, pet sit, house sit in their absence or other services. Whatever you do take good care of your credit rating and pay any rent or bills or negotiate to pay them.
