For my daughters first birthday, I didn't really have a theme. We had a cake in the shape of a flower with balloons and lunch at the park.

When she turned 2 I had a butterfly theme at home.

I made her a butterfly shaped cake, butterfly decorations and had a bbq.

We played pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey. I made my own version of pin the tail in the donkey out of card, which had a big light blue backgroud, a pink flower standing up in grass with a few butterflies flying round the flower. I got the kids to stick more butterflies in other colours onto the flower, the one closest to the middle of the flower won.

If you want to do it on the cheap make your own cake and decorations. If you want face painting ask a friend or family member that is abit arty to do it for you.

I personally wouldn't go too overboard for a first party, she won't remember it. I know mine don't have a clue about their first birthdays and they got very overwhelmed on the day with everything that was going on

I agree at 1 clowns and such might be a bit much. Most kids have stranger anxiety at that age and all that commotion might be a bit much. If you insist on doing it I would look at your school and see if they have an art program you might be able to find an art major willing to do the face painting for some extra cash.

Are you going to have older kids there? I cant think of many games that a one year old will be able to play. My daughters first party just consisted of a grocery store cake, grandparents and siblings, we didn't even buy her a present because her grandparents went overboard.

Honestly? I would make a cake and munchies, invite over some friends and family, and maybe blow up a few balloons or something. She's a year old -- she won't remember whether her birthday party had a theme or whether there was a clown or a face painter. (Also, little kids are sometimes TERRIFIED by clowns and giant characters -- my DD was frightened by someone dressed up as a giant Dora the Explorer at a party when she was 3, and was still talking about "the big scary Dora" two years later LOL.) First birthday parties are really for the grown-ups, so there's no reason it has to be expensive :)
