It really depends what you want to do. I know that stuff like Avon, Regal, Scentsy, etc will all let you sell either direct to friends or from a website you set up. They usually don't require you to buy stock so it's either startup costs for the catalogues or business cards and stuff - Avon had a $10 signup last month and that's all you pay into it unless you want to keep stock - the Avon lady I use just sells out of the booklet and doesn't keep anything on hand.
If you have any clerical skills, typing, editing, etc or any other skills like computers or anything you could try some of the freelancing sites like ODesk, Elance, etc. They have free signups and you can look for jobs that would work for you.
I do medical transcription from home but I had to take a course to get certified. I was lucky because Employment Insurance (I'm in Canada) retrained me so I didn't have to pay for the course. There are other things like that (medical coding/billing) that you have to take a course for, but once you are certified you can at least find some work that you can do from home.
Good luck on your search.
