I was 28 when I had my first born and 29 when my second was born. My first baby was delayed for a day, then on the day of his birth, it took 14 hours of labour before he was born. My second baby took 10 mins. He was born breech, so he had to be born on an emergency C-section.

The hospital only count labour from 2-3 centimetres (uk) so from that until our daughter was born in 6 hours 40 mins but as far as i was concerned i was in labour before that when the contractions started about 30 hours before i was even admitted by the hospital!!

With my oldest, I was 21 years old and in labor for about 9 hours and pushed for 3 hours. He was a monster with very broad shoulders! With my daughter, I was 22 years old and had no idea I was in labor. I went to the hospital at about 4:00 pm and she was born less than 6 hours later with about 10 minutes of pushing! She weighed almost three pounds less than her brother did!

[deleted account]

With my first I was in labor 10 hours and 44 minutes but on top of that I pushed for 3 hours. I'm praying my second one goes alot easier and quicker. =)

i was 18 when i had my first. my partnes friend had been in a car accident so he went to the hospital to see him, about 10 mins after he got back my waters broke. i was inlabour for 5 hours. really easy birth. my son was born at three in the morning, and the midwife asked me if i wanted to go home that afternoon. unfortunatly my partners friend died a week later. every one says when there is a death there is a life. Horrible thort but Berk will always be in our hearts. R.I.P Berk

I was 18 when I had my first baby, I was in labor for 12 hours, had false labor 3 days before that. I did it totally natural, no drugs what so ever, of course no one asked me if I wanted any either? My next baby, I was 21 and had 8 hours of labor and any drugs they would give me. Also with my last one I was 23 and had 7 hours of labor and was induced, cause he was 2 1/2 weeks late, I knew this was my last one so I again took anything they would give me. I don't recommend being induced though, unless you the doctor feels it is needed.

Quoting Jessica:

18 when I had mine... I had painless contractions all day, progressed to being uncomfortable for about an hour, only got really bad when they broke my water... 3 hours later baby came. No pain meds or anything.

Out of all the mothers I've ever talked to, it seems like the ones with the shortest labour didn't use pain meds, the ones that had the epidurals took much much longer for baby to come. I think it has something to do with actually being able to feel it so your body knows whats going on... and can make it end sooner. Can everyone start putting whether or not you got the epidural? I want to see how it works out with a bunch of people.

I was 24 when I had my Son, and I was in REAL labor for 17 1/2 hours! Only about 2 hours of that was BEFORE my water broke.

Speaking from my own experience, I would have to disagree about the length of labor depending on medications or not. Going in, I was dead set AGAINST an epidural! After 14 hours of labor, and in excruciating pain (having back labor as well as cramping in the front) I had stopped dilating at 7cm. I decided to get the epidural, and within an hour, I had finished dilating to 10. My theory is that once I got the epidural, my body was able to work WITH the cntractions instead of fighting against the pain, therefore I dilated more quickly after I was more comfortable. I ended up pushing for nearly 2 hours though, because my son's head was stuck under my pelvic bone. Finally the doctor had to use the vacuum to help get him out, or otherwise I would have ended up with a C-Section.

That's just my experience, and I hope that some mom or mom to be one day finds it helpful!
