all depression, including pnd, is caused by physical pain in the autonomic nervous system. it is NOT a mental problem, can be reduced, treated and cured by massage, acupressure, acupuncture, older osteopaths, possibly chiropractors, it should take no more than 2 or 3 treatments.you can alleviate the symptoms a little with sam-e, or st johns wort. ian

Women are often not treated nicely during childbirth. One of my neighbors wanted to shoot her OB nurse. When people are mean to you during a time when you need kindness, it seems to result in "PTSD," which might be exacerbated by all the hormones involved. I think B complex could help. Try to keep your thinking in the right places. Eat right. Sleep right (not easy with a new baby). Go out for walks in the sunshine with your baby. Nursing also helps.

My daughter is 18 months old and I still get it at times. The good news is that by now i recognize the feelings when they are happening and become very mindful of what I do about it - how I react.

When it was intense was directly after giving birth for the first few months - the first 4 weeks were horrible, I cried all the time and was certain my daughter was going to die in a car accident?! I am unsure why in particular I created that in my head.

Than when she was between 8-10 months it kicked in like crazy, than I thought my daughter didn't love me and I was not good at being a mother. I compared all other mothers to me and felt like I wanted to run away. 10 months I go on my knees and prayed harder than I had prayed in years. -- In the midst of it all, I finally had the nervous break down that helped me clear things up.

I realized how beautiful my life was and that my daughter was just being original and a baby, who didn't always like to be hugged and held -- nothing to do with me as a mother.

How i coped::

~I openly discussed it, I talked about what my feelings were like with friends/family and importantly my doctor.

~I journal my feelings when I was in them so that later I could re-read it and recognize just how crazy I was thinking. -- this helped with insight that it was in fact PPD

~I noted when there was a lot of pressure or stress going on in my life because I realized in my case, the ppd acted out the most when I was under stress.

~I prayed. I practiced fitness and I became mindful not to let it feed too much into my daughters life.

Get help... from fam, friends, counselors, Dr's...

You need to take breaks..

Go work out, go to church, go to the movies, shop.. find a goal and work towards it often..but take breaks from the baby..

It will get the best of you if you don't get a bit of a handle on it..

When you leave the baby with someone safe and return, you feel refreshed.. and you are excited to begin again...

No breaks for mommy equal, mommy breaking!

It was a very mild case and I just took 1 day at a time, talked to family everyday, didn't worry about house work - as Katherine said - I made myself exercise at least once a week, I was able to drop my baby off with my husband for a couple of hours, this gave me some time on my own, even if it was driving to and from the class. I think improving my diet and reaching out to other moms may have helped quite a bit, but I struggled with those aspects.

Looking back and knowing what I know now, I think that I did have PPD (PND). It went untreated and was a struggle, but I had a supportive husband and family (even though I was on the other side of the world from them). It probably lingered longer than it would have if I had found someone who could identify the symptoms.

Make sure that you have someone to talk to and know that you will get through it. THere is a book by Dr. Shoshana Bennett http://www.amazon.com/Postpartum-Depress...

It has lots of helpful medication. Talk to your doctor if you don't think the medication is working. I am so glad that you were able to catch this early on. Good Luck!

Meds, not worrying about the house, networking with other moms, getting involved with my daughters school. I've had it for years. It never seemed to go away :(

Yes, anxiety is the worst! I hated that aspect of it. Just take care of you and your little one.

I had to get on medication. It was very difficult as I didn't know what in the heck was wrong with me! I spoke to my doctor and told her what was going on and she diagnosed me with it. She put me on Paxil and it helped a ton! Also exercise and being with others helps a lot too.

Having help and someone to maybe watch the baby so you can sleep is helpful too. Don't try to do too much as it makes it worse.
