Hi! I just found out I have pneumonia and I am still breast feeding my 18mo baby boy. He has always refused a bottle and a sippy cup. So I'm still breast feeding him being sick. Can he catch pneumonia from me?

As long as whatever meds you are on are safe for nursing... it's fine. If he's going to get pneumonia it would be from living w/ you while you are sick... not from the breastfeeding. The fact that you are breastfeeding him while you are sick actually makes him LESS likely to get it.

It's fine to keep nursing. Your milk is more likely to offer protection than anything else. As your body makes anti-bodies to fight the infection they'll be in your milk too.

Pneumonia is any type of infection that gets deep into your lungs. Most of the viruses and bacteria that can cause an infection with the capacity to turn into pneumonia are actually airborne. They're spread by breathing, coughing and sneezing.

Just make sure that any medication you are taking is safe for your baby too. The best way to check is to ask a lactation consultant or your pediatrician. The pharmacist and your own doctor are more likely to tell you not to nurse simply because of a lack of knowledge. Many medications pass into breast milk but that does not mean they are unsafe for baby.
