I'm actually Molly's grandmother (Ama) but I am really concerned about putting a 4 year old on Risperdol. She is autistic. ppd-nos, odd, adhd and has language delays. Given all this, she seems like a pretty normal kid to me. She was 3 years old when she started kindergarten. Thank goodness they hadn't instituted full day kindergarten then! On the medication I note that she is much easier to manage but I almost never have problems with her as long as I don't expect too much. She has gained too much weight and is developing breasts at the age of five! Does any one else have similar experiences. I find it very difficult to give her this medication when it goes so strongly against what I see.

Thanks for your input. My daughter and I are very close. She had a very difficult childhood with long hospitalizations for epilepsy. She and I are accustomed to be open with each other. Molly is not my daughter but I do care for her and her brother for periods of 3-4 days and nights at a time. I was planning to see if I can attend the next doctor's appointment. I confess that I did not expect you to attack my position but rather to add guidance from your own experience.

Well, as a grandmother of course you love and are concerned with your grandchild. But it is not your place to manage her medically unless you have full custody and are raising her as your own. You of course can gently bring up your concerns with her mother, and maybe ask to go to one of her doctors appointments to learn more about her treatment plan. This way you can ask all the questions that you want, and you will get solid answers. And if you are not a full time parent, you don't fully understand what she is like on a 24 hour 7 day a week basis.
