Looking for some input. My son's father and I don't live together but we live in the same building and the child lives with me. The father wants to take our son to visit his family in another state for Thanksgiving. Our son will be 14 months old , he is still partially nursing, and has never been away from mommy except for spending one night with his father. So my question is - is my son too young right now to be traveling wthout mommy?

Thanksgiving isn't until late November. But the father is making plans because he isn't sure whether to fly or drive 10 hours with our son. It's not that nursing is an issue, but the father only seems to take baby when it is convient for him. We started a few weeks ago having baby stay with daddy every other weekend from friday night until sunday night. Problem is father works as a DJ every saturday night and he NEEDS to his nap around 5pm, leaves for work at 8:30 pm, doesn't get home until 2am and then sleeps in until noon on sundays. So baby comes back upstairs with mommy. Then there is the issue of "well I have things to do". This is his first child (at the age of 42) and my fourth and he doesn't seem to grasp the concept that everyone who has kids has things they need to do, and you have to work your needs around caring for a child. Even his eating dinner has become an issue. So no, baby staying with daddy for longer periods of time isn't going to happen.

Isn't thanksgiving still a few months away? I'm in Australia so we don't celebrate it.

How long is he planning on going away for? Your son may self wean by then so it nursing part wouldn't be an issue. Maybe you should let him get to stay with his father for longer before then.
