Is it a tantrum or a fear?

My son is a developmentally challenged 2 1/2 year old. Lately, he has been getting scared at, what my husband and I view are, the strangest things. For example, we tried to watch Disney's The Princess and the Frog with him and 2 minutes into the movie, he was screaming like he was terrified. The only he saw were people singing and some frogs. He does this with certain commercials too-not scary movie trailers, but commercials like the new JCPenney one where people are freaking out about sales. We aren't sure how to help our son with this. It is getting to the point where if we have anything on TV that isn't Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, he freaks out. Today my husband started playing a game on the XBox and Trevor immediately started crying. I picked him up and he clung to me like a vice. The minute my husband paused the game, he dried his eyes and was fine. The second my husband turned the game back on, Trevor started screaming again. We have no idea what to do and are really concerned. Any advice would be appreciated.

If it were me I would try his pediatrician first. They could then refer you further if they can't help. It sure does sound like a sensory overload, he may not be able to handle loud and fast moving things, especially on TV. Good Luck, I am sure you will get a good answer and find ways to help him, it may take a few appts but I wish you luck!!

He hasn't been looked at by a doctor yet. Should I take him to his pediatrician or look into taking him to a child psychologist?

I would say he is very sensitive to high action and loud noise. Has he been looked at by a doctor?
