Is it ADHD or could it be something else?

My son has been "catagorized" as ADHD and on meds since he was in first grade (he is now in 3rd grade). The problem is that any medication he has tried has only worked for about a week and then it seems like he builds a tolerance. He also, like many others, has horrible emotional side effects from most of the meds. I am getting to the point where I am wondering if he really has ADHD or if there is something else going on. He is a very intelligent little boy, but stuggles to complete anything and his grades are suffering. I am also struggling to find anyone who can help us work through this. Does anyone have any suggestions/comments? We are at our wits end and I don't know what to do anymore.

He does have an IEP in place at school, but I am not sure they are following it like they should. We are getting ready to change school systems, so I am looking for one that has a good program for kids like him.

If the meds aren't helping it may be that they are medicating the wrong illness so are using the wrong med. I would see if you can have him reassessed now that he is older. That being said does he not have an individualized program at his school where we live it is called an IPP and it lets the kids get extra help where it is needed and extra time for tests, stuff like that. If he doesn't I would talk to his principal about whether something like that is available for your son.
