is it bad form to bring your 5 month old baby to a friends baby shower?

No, it's fine. Just be aware that your baby is more "fun" than the newborn (who will probably be sleeping or nursing the whole time) and people will pay attention to the older one, so try not to be an attention hog and always bring the conversation back to the new mom and baby if she seems not to be getting enough attention. But that's life and it's a baby shower, surely that's one place a baby is always welcome! I always bring my son to baby showers, first because he was nursing and now because he can play with the other little kids that are there, too. (also it's a convenient excuse to leave early if the games are too horrendous)

Oh, there's no baby yet? Hmm. Either that makes it even more okay because the pregnant one can "test-drive" a baby for the evening, or it makes it an adults-only event. Not sure in that case. Is there someone you could ask? Maybe the hostess?
