Is it bad to leave a 5 year old who is in kindergarten in after school programs until 5pm, or is it too many hours for them to be away from home.

I am looking to start working, and my 5 year old daughter is currently attending kindergarten from 8:30 am to 3:pm. I am thinking on getting a job until no later than 5pm, so I will need to leave her in after school program until 5pm, but I feel guilty leaving her in school for so many hours. My husband's business is not doing great at the moment, and I feel that I am wasting time doing nothing at home, when I could be working, and bringing some money. I usually finish all my chores by 11 am every day, and then the rest of the time, I have nothing to do, and so I am most of the time bored at home. Any suggestions, I will appreciate it.

If you HAVE to work that long in order to financially survive... I'm sure she'll adjust. If you don't HAVE to.... I wouldn't. Go for something part time... Maybe just mornings or something that will have you able to be done by the time she gets out of school.

Many K kids are in after school programs til 5 and do just fine, but for me, personally, I wouldn't do it unless I had absolutely no other choice.

It is a lot, but they adjust, if that is the way you need it to be. I know of 3 and 4 year olds that go through is. Some kids are even in daycares from 7am until 6pm.

I agree with Teresa maybe find something part time in the morning and then head home in the afternoon to do your chores. I don't know what you're looking for but you can probably get a job in retail with moms hours, as long as you're reliable you should get decent hours. But if you need to do something full time your daughter will adjust.

What Teresa said.

If you do have to leave her in an after school program see if you can avoid the Latchkey programs. Those are just loosely controlled chaos.
