Not everyone will agree on this issue so you need to decide what advice you want to take. If you are just starting out and your child is under 2, I would use pull ups when you leave the house. That way you won't have soiled clothing and crazy dashes to the bathroom. When you are home, let him pick out underwear and use it, he will be aware when he is wet. The bottom line is you need your son to tell you when he needs to go more than having an easier clean up. Using the toilet is one thing kids have control over. You can't force the issue, you can motivate, praise and reward him for success but do not punish accidents.
I was a proponent of allowing my child decide when to train. I tried the whole rewards and sticker charts at around 2 and we both were unhappy. I finally decided to wait until he was motivated. I was pretty sure he would not enter pre-k in diapers. At 3 years and 4 months he trained in one day! Unless you have a day care that requires training, I say let your child lead the way.
