My son is three and he can say some words but he does not say a lot of words clearly and he can not form sentences. Is this normal for a three year old?

My third son is also 3, and I was concerned about this very same thing so I brought it up to his doctor. He wasn't concerned at all, and said that if he's not understandable by 4, then he will be concerned. He said boys tend to learn to speak later than girls, and also children further down the birth order tend to talk later, also.

I have a 3 year old daughter who does seem to know a lot of words and can speak in sentences, although not sure what the "norm" is as all kids are so different.. My daughter goes to daycare which I believe has helped her immensely with her speech and I try and encourage her to tell me about her day, tell stories etc. I believe it will come eventually but if you are really concerned, perhaps bring it up with your GP.
