when infants say da da or ma ma before... i'd say around 9-12 months it is usually indiscriminatory. They don't understand the meaning, it's just babble. My daughter has said ma ma and da da since 6 months. She is 11 months now and I only now believe there is meaning behind it. She says ma ma ma when she's hungry. I think she just associates it with eating? she's not necessarily referring to me. ;) She could be, I really don't know. But before it's just the same babble as ga ga ga or ba ba ba or any other consonant sound.

If your 10 month old is saying: "hi" then she's a lot farther advanced than most babies. My children didn't say their first word until 12 months. Some children don't say their first word until 18 months.

Thank you for responding I guess I'm just a worry wort. I have a few friends who have babies that are six months old and they're saying da da and ma ma she doesn't put any other sounds together just hi and she waves pointing at things that she wants.
