My heart sank when his doctor referred him to the speech therapist. Am modified and haven't even called to setup an appointment yet.

A speech therapist is not the end of the world. Many kids will actually have some kind of speech work done either prior to school or once they get into kindergarten. There are many sounds that are hard for kids to figure out how to say. A speech therapist is someone who is trained in how to teach little kids to say those sounds correctly. There are some really neat tricks that sometimes help for it to click for little kids. If your doctor referred you to one make the appointment! It is just the same as if your doctor referred you to an eye doctor for vision issues. Especially with speech if you address the issue early on by time a child hits school age the issues are resolved and they speak just like every other 5 yr old.
