is it okay to pick my toddler up?

If its extremely painful then don't but don't tell your toddler you can no longer pick them up because of the baby because you will cause your toddler to resent your baby before it even arrives. If the pain is only sometimes then let your toddler know when you are pain free.

Of course, why not?
Unless you're having trouble with spotting or need to be on bedrest or something. One of my friends had to teach her toddler to push a chair over and climb into his crib by himself, and could only hold him when she was sitting down. It was sad, but it needed to be done to protect the baby. But that was on drs orders, she was bleeding and needed to not pick anything up.
My toddler is big (almost 3, 31 lbs), and I still swing him around for "airplane rides", throw him onto his bed, and give him piggyback rides sometimes and I'm due in 4 weeks. I don't carry him as much as I used to because I'm more tired, and I'm trying to get him used to doing things on his own now because I don't want him to blame the baby for mommy not carrying him up and down the stairs. But it was time for him to do it himself anyway. We still rough-house, but he knows to be careful of the baby and mommy's belly.
edit: if it hurts, don't do it.
